Why do so many of us - put so much of our time and resources - into thinking in a similar way?

Most tribes, teams, and communities have standards.

It's good to raise the standard.

But an exclusive pursuit of "The Standard" means we put more time and resources into SWITCHING On the brain's ability to learn to think in a similar way to our tribe and SWITCH Off the brain's ability to think a little more differently. A healthy brain needs both switched on.

To attain The Standard we need to know the details to meet The Standard.

Look at the details of the black shapes below.

Now look at the space between the black shapes.

See the angels?

The focus on the details blinds us to the space between the details.

The image is 'Heaven or Hell' by M.C.Escher, 1960

Watch the video below to see how a focus on the details can blind us to many things.

If we can’t see space between the details we don’t see how we can move the details to create something out of nothing. If we can’t create something out of nothing we can’t adapt on the field of play. Our ability to think a little more differently is SWITCHED Off. All we can do is run at - overcome - what or who - is in the way of us attaining The Standard.

We are not meant to just be standard. We are also meant to think a little more differently to experience the beauty, joy, and life-changing ways to perform that always lie beyond attaining the standard.

How can we "SWITCH On" the brain's ability to think a little more differently?

To think a little more differently we need to create something out of nothing.

In the picture below - Focus on the details of the flowers

Now, look at the space between the flowers.

The face is made from space. It's an image that comes from nothing. The artist has created something out of nothing.

We can play at moving the flowers to make a more male face. Turn the flowers into players and we can play at moving the players to reshape space to create something out of nothing. We play to see what we didn’t see before. It seems magical. From where did that solution come? We experience how the natural elasticity of the brain means we can always find new ways to think a little more differently.

BUT,

To stir your curiosity: Text

Today's society is geared towards motivating us to attain The Standard in almost every aspect of our lives. This is not going to change as it is a good idea to lift standards. The motivation to SWITCH On our ability to think like others is everywhere.

To stop this switching off the brain's ability to think a little more differently we need to temporarily ring-fence ourselves against the pressure to meet The Standard. We need a place to play to experience the beauty of the dance - that comes from playing with space. The joy that comes from adapting on the field of play to find previously unseen performance that always lies beyond attaining any standard in anything.

When the brain's ability to think in a similar way is switched on - without switching off the brain's ability to think a little more differently - we restore our fluidity, our creativity, our *neurodiversity, and our humanity.

*By neurodiversity, we mean we all think a little bit differently from each other. No two brains think in the same way. We are all - to varying degrees - neurodiverse from each other.
