It requires a change in emphasis on how sport is coached. At the moment, the emphasis is on players first learning the individual parts before linking them together in a cohesive framework, striving to achieve a result that closely resembles the sum of the parts. The moments where players create something greater than the sum of the parts—a phenomenon known as Gestalt- can only be fleeting and uncoachable.

Making those fleeting moments of inspiration standard requires changing the emphasis from mending what metrics indicate is broken. To give all attention to ever-evolving connections between all parts, waiting for opportunities to offer previously unseen alternatives as someone’s options begin to dwindle. Even when players know, especially when they know, they can’t execute all the parts flawlessly. Players commit to succeed by exploring the unknown together. The resulting Gestalt of connection puts players on a learning curve where they achieve performance greater than the sum of their currently ineffective parts, which will also give players more time to execute the parts better. In this way, a Gestalt connection can be trained to become the standard rather than a rare occurrence.
