Setting the scene


Experts who study AI and the human brain agree on a fundamental principle: for a system to work, its functional parts must be assembled effectively, and the relationships between those parts must be continually adjusted to sustain whole-system resilience in its environment. Think of driving a car, whether the driver is an AI system or a human being.


AI uses one way of attending to the world.


It builds functions to generate predictions, executes them, compares the outcomes with its expectations, measures the errors, and corrects itself. It applies this process both to assembling functional parts and to adjusting the relationships between them in order to sustain whole-system resilience. When a self-driving car travels along a busy high street, AI performs the functions needed to operate the car while measuring the distances between all the functional parts around it.
