Let’s stop connecting in a way that makes us less than the sum of our parts
Let's connect as a Gestalt. Let's create something greater than the sum of our parts. Let's connect for more, not less.
Practice and planning aim to prepare for scenarios when things don’t go as expected. When players commit to fulfilling a specific role within a collective effort, it’s natural for them to focus solely on executing their individual part flawlessly. Inevitably, there will be times when the ability to perform parts declines to the point where the sum of parts starts to fragment. Players with all their attention on executing their part feel disoriented and overwhelmed, leading to fundamental mistakes that are uncharacteristic of their usual performance. The team becomes less than the sum of its parts at the very moment they need to become more than the sum of its parts.
Addressing this challenge isn’t about pushing players to execute their parts with greater precision. Rather, it involves nurturing connections to create something greater than the sum of the parts—a *Gestalt*. Players observe the big picture of what is going on around them, waiting for opportunities to step in and offer previously unseen alternatives as someone’s options begin to dwindle. Players know they have each other's backs as they navigate the unknown, instilling a belief that they can achieve anything together.
However, if players neglect to consistently practice this *Gestalt*, the ability of today's technology to measure ever more will divert players' attention back to perfecting the execution of fixed parts in a fixed sum of parts. They will lose their ability for Gestalt. At the very moment they need to be more than the sum of their parts, they will be less than the sum of their parts.
