We make those fleeting moments of connection that create something greater than the sum of the parts - happen more often

When performance unexpectedly declines below the sum of the parts, seemingly without cause, it is more about connection than technique. This situation arises because players overthink their parts, causing them to lose sight of the connections between all parts. We lift performance to something greater than the sum of the parts, a phenomenon known as Gestalt, by training players to put all their attention on the connections between all the parts.

One of the earliest examples of coaching players to play without thinking like a machine can be traced back to Phil Jackson and the triangle offense. Phil Jackson is regarded as one of the greatest coaches of all time. He was the head coach of the Chicago Bulls from 1989 to 1998, leading them to six NBA championships. Phil Jackson’s primary focus was on establishing organic, dynamic, flowing relationships of movement between all the players on the court. He knew that even having the best player who ever played basketball, Michael Jordan, winning still came down to the relationships between all the players. A player in Phil Jackson’s team, Steve Kerr has taken this approach forward with the Golden State Warriors and the men’s USA team. We clearly don't have the same caliber…
