Paying attention to the cohesive whole.
Whenever players and coaches are asked about how they won a close game, they nearly always say how they connected as a cohesive whole. Yet, little attention is given to training the ability to sustain a cohesive whole.
_______________
The brain perceives what it knows is there.
According to Dr. Iain McGilchrist's work, in an era where technological advancements reduce uncertainty, the left hemisphere can sustain success by organizing and balancing these familiar parts. To be part of this world, we either need to be acknowledged as an integral part or recognized as a new addition. This is a key reason why the world is increasingly fragmenting into smaller segments. When one of these segments challenges the validity of others, conflict emerges, creating a dichotomy of right versus wrong, or a struggle of control and submission.
Achieving calmness cannot be accomplished merely by balancing these segments, as this method still prioritizes the assembly of parts. It requires someone to submit and seed control to others. True tranquility arises when we concentrate on the connections between all the parts, nurturing an awareness of the whole. We shape this whole, so new opportunities emerge as current ones dwindle. We sustain a cohesive whole. Two of the most effective activities for training this are basketball and swimming.
