When players concentrate solely on fulfilling their parts within a fixed framework of parts, any fragmentation leads to uncharacteristic errors from the players, and the team’s overall performance falls below the sum of the players' individual talents.
The solution isn’t simply about getting players to better execute their parts. Instead, it’s to loosen the framework controlling the parts, so players can use the connections between the parts to create a *Gestalt*— something greater than the sum of their individual talents.
Players accomplish this by observing the big picture of what is going on around them, waiting for opportunities to step in and offer previously unseen alternatives as someone’s options begin to dwindle. This fosters a creative environment where everyone succeeds by exploring the unknown.
In sport and in life, we must all continually train our *Gestalt*, as the increasing capacity of technology to measure performance metrics often shifts our focus back to perfecting parts in a rigid framework of parts. We need to stop becoming less than the sum of our parts.
