Let’s stop being less than the sum of our parts
Let's connect as a Gestalt. Let's create something greater than the sum of our parts. Let's connect for more, not less.
When players are giving all their attention to flawlessly executing their part in a fixed sum of parts, any fragmentation leads to uncharacteristic mistakes, and the team’s performance becomes less than the sum of the parts.
Addressing this challenge isn’t about pushing players to execute their parts with greater precision. Rather, it involves nurturing connections to create something greater than the sum of the parts—a *Gestalt*. Players observe the big picture of what is going on around them, waiting for opportunities to step in and offer previously unseen alternatives as someone’s options begin to dwindle. Players know they have each other's backs as they navigate the unknown, instilling a belief that they can achieve anything together.
However, if players neglect to consistently practice this *Gestalt*, the ability of today's technology to measure parts of a performance will divert players' and coaches attention back to perfecting the execution of parts in a fixed sum of parts. They will lose their ability for Gestalt.

About the event
Most sports coaches are generally trained to break down their sport into specific, measurable functions and instruct their players to perfect them. To assemble teams by building systems of pre-planned functions. Teams compete with predictable, attritional, systems of functional play.
A focus on player welfare means most governing bodies are changing their rules to make playing less attritional and easier for players to create more Wow moments for social media. This is allowing a different playing strategy to emerge. It is where players time their movements in relationship to others to open and close space. Compared to the functional approach this relational strategy is a much more organic, natural, and flowing style of play. It is less likely for players to get major injuries and less likely to be fouled out of the game, and it creates the Wow moments we want to watch and be part of.
