Those fleeting moments of uncoachable inspiration are connections that create something greater than the sum of the parts, a phenomenon known as Gestalt.
Players get more Gestalt by putting all attention on the dynamic connections between all parts. Waiting for opportunities to offer previously unseen alternatives as someone’s options begin to dwindle. And if nothing appears, look for something else. When players let metrics divert their attention to fixing parts, Gestalt can’t happen because players lose awareness of the connections between all the parts. Coaches should use metrics to set problems for players to use their connections to solve.
